12 Chimney Rock In Tawaoc

There are a number of these lava formations scattered throughout the western states. Notable examples are in Wyoming (Devil’s Tower) and New Mexico (Ship Rock) and in Colorado (Chimney Rock National Monument, Colorado). This one is in Tawaoc, New Mexico, near Cortez, Colorado across the state border.

The formations occurred eons ago when lava intruded through cracks or holes in the Earth’s crust. Over many centuries the overlying crust eroded away, leaving the much harder lave standing.
